Tallahassee, FL – Andrea Garcia has cemented her name in Seminole history. The senior from Asturias, Spain recorded her 199th and 200th career wins at FSU Sunday setting a new all-time career wins record for the program as No. 6 Florida State defeated Virginia Tech 6-1.
Garcia, who has recorded at least 27 wins every year in her career, broke the career wins record set by Lauren McCreless from 2007-10. Garcia is already the first Seminole to record 100 wins in doubles and is just one singles win away from joining just five other Seminoles with 100 career wins in singles as well.
“I have no words,” said Garcia. “I had no idea that I was so close to this record. I could not have done this without all my teammates, coaches and support staff. I don’t think there is a better way to complete my senior year. It is insane. This isn’t just my record. It belongs to everyone I played with. Everyone that helped me.”
“Getting to 200 wins is an insane number,” said FSU head coach Jen Hyde. “I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen again in this program. Dre has been a consistent force since she first got here along with this senior class. The fact that she is the all-time record-holder isn’t that big of a surprise because she has been so good for so long. I am so glad she is a Seminole. I am so glad she is here. I am so glad she chose us. She has been a program-changer and I am so proud and happy for her. She has earned this. It’s a big day for her and a big day for Florida State tennis.”
The record-setting day started with an impressive performance in doubles. Emmanuelle Salas and Victoria Allen set the tone for the Seminoles. The nation’s 42nd-ranked doubles pair came off first with a 6-2 win. Giulia Pairone and Petra Hule clinched the point with a 6-2 victory and Garcia and Nandini Das finished off doubles with a 6-3 victory. That win tied Garcia for the all-time record.
Hule made quick work of her opponent in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Allen put the Seminoles on the verge of the win with her 6-2, 6-1 victory. Pairone clinched the win for FSU with her 6-1, 6-4 victory on court one but it was Garcia’s match on six where everyone was focused. After Das closed out her win, the entire team and everyone in the stands focused on Garcia and she was able to celebrate the record with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory.
“The team did a fantastic job taking care of the work we needed to do to have another undefeated ACC weekend,” said Hyde. “We are always going to get our opponent’s best efforts and that was true today with Virginia Tech. They kept swinging and they kept coming for us. We did a good job of stopping things, putting our foot down and controlling the courts. We anticipate, expect and look forward to opponents swinging at us, that’s a privilege and we talk about that all the time. I was proud of the way the girls stopped any momentum shifts and finished the job.”
The Seminoles will complete their ACC slate Friday at home versus rival Miami. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start Friday, April 9 and FSU’s senior class will be honored before the match.
