FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team (22-17, 11-3 ASUN) split two games with Jacksonville (23-15, 9-8 ASUN) Saturday afternoon as the Eagles fell in game one, 3-0, before bouncing back to take game two, 2-0.

With the win, FGCU will have the No. 1 seed in the South Division in a few weeks when the quarterfinal series starts May 7-8 at campus sites.

"Today we didn't play well and we're lucky we were able to get one of the two today," said head coach David Deiros. "Marissa was a warrior in game two and willed us to victory. I'm proud of that performance and looking forward to celebrating our seniors tomorrow and closing out the series strong."

Game 1 | JU 3, FGCU 0
Two of the three runs from JU came off the bat of Madison Kennedy in the top of the second as she launched a two-run homer over the center-field wall. The final run was scored on an error in the top of the sixth en route to the 3-0 win.

FGCU was held to just two hits in game one, an Abbey Thomas (Fort Myers, Fla./Southwest Christian) single in the third, followed by an infield single from McKenna Batterton (Norco, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt HS) in the seventh. The Eagles stranded two runners on the base pads.

Sarah Lawton (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross HS/FSW) suffered the loss (7-6) after her 5.1 innings, scattering six hits, two runs, one walk with two strikeouts.

Game 2 | FGCU 2, JU 0
All the damage for the Green and Blue was done in the bottom of the third as three hits produced the only runs of the afternoon. Looking at two outs, Batterton roped a triple to right-center to keep the inning alive for Reedy Davenport (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) who scored Batterton on an RBI single to right. Up next, Taylor Bauman (Jacksonville, Fla./Atlantic Coast HS) doubled to the center-field wall for the 2-0 margin.

Meanwhile, Marissa Mesiemore (Bushnell, Fla./South Sumter HS) continued to deal as she held the Dolphins hitless until the fifth frame as she worked around a jam with runners on first and second. JU brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh, but a grounder over to Davenport sealed the deal with the force out at third base.

JU outhit FGCU, 6-4, leaving eight runners on the bags. Batterton finished game two going 2-for-3. Mesiemore moves to 12-6 while tossing her fifth complete game of the year, giving up just one walk.

In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
