Any word on when new assistants for the men’s team are going to be named? — @arrky66
I hate to be boring, but there’s no real news on this front. I doubt any announcement comes as long as that third assistant spot is unfilled. There hasn’t been much rumbling after the initial flourish of behind-the-scenes moves that remain the worst-kept secrets around the program — i.e. Kahil Fennell promoted to be one of the assistant coaches and Taylor Barnette presumed to be in line to replace Fennell as the director of basketball operations.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello first mentioned Indiana assistant Kenya Hunter as a possibility on the Floyd Street’s Finest podcast, and then Hunter’s name all the sudden popped up everywhere else. Hunter interviewed with Chris Mack before deciding to stay in Bloomington and join Mike Woodson’s staff at Indiana. Another name — former Penn State assistant Keith Urgo — came up early in the process, but I haven’t heard anything about him in a while. Former Cincinnati coach John Brannen, one of Mack’s closest friends, was a hot topic on the message boards and I mentioned him in this newsletter, but that is a no-go.
Mack is in no hurry to fill the last opening on his staff, primarily because the pandemic has disrupted the recruiting cycle, making it less urgent to go find another assistant. He will need to fill his staff out before summer workouts, of course, but he has time. I do know there is a host of assistants interested in the spot who may be connected via intermediaries, but that hasn’t played out yet to my knowledge. It’s just a matter of finding the right fit for what Mack wants on his staff.

—The NCAA hit USC hoops with a couple years probation but no postseason for its role in the FBI’s probe into college basketball.
This marks the second straight case (South Carolina being the other) where the NCAA committee on infractions has opted not to go with a postseason ban. Considering the committee did hit Oklahoma State with a postseason ban (likely to be overturned on appeal) for a case that was extremely similar to the last two, it’s hard not to think that the NCAA is responding in some way to the sprint that several programs, including Louisville, have made to the IARP over the last year.
Speaking of the IARP, are we sure this thing actually exists? It’s starting to feel more and more like a startup that generates a ton of buzz an investors early on, and then two years later reveals that it wasn’t actually doing anything.
Can’t wait to be done with all this when I’m in my mid-50s.
