BISMARCK, N.D. -- The Augustana baseball team rebounded from its 5-4 game one loss Saturday afternoon with an 11-9 victory in game two against the Marauders of UMary. The Vikings are now 16-5 on the season and 12-5 within the NSIC.
Game One
Junior lefty Tanner Brown got the start for the Vikings in game one and went five innings while surrendering five hits and four runs with eight strikeouts. Brown's runs all came in the bottom of the third on a couple of two-out two-run Marauder homers.
Augustana, however, scored first in the game in the top of the second inning. Senior shortstop led the inning off with a single to left field and then stole second base. With nobody out, senior infielder Christian Kuzemka laced an RBI single down the left field line for the 1-0 lead.
Down 4-1 in the top of the fourth, junior infielder Jordan Barth singled and senior outfielder Riley Johnson walked to start the inning. After a Baier fly ball moved Barth to third, Kuzemka brought Barth home with a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the day.
Junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz then came to the plate in the top of the fifth inning for the Vikings, after a leadoff single from junior catcher Will Olson. Rosencranz launched a ball over the left field wall to knot the score at 4-4. The longball was Rosencranz's fourth of the season.
Sophomore utility man Tony Lanier took the ball from Brown in the bottom of the sixth and delivered a scoreless frame with two strikeouts.
The Augustana bats, however, were held quiet in the final two frames and UMary's Derek Shoen led the bottom of the seventh inning off with a walk-off solo homer for the 5-4 game-one victory.
Game Two
Sophomore righty Ryan Jares started game two for Augustana and went seven innings, scattered eight hits and four runs and struck out nine Marauders. With the win, Jares moves to 3-0 on the season.
Jares received heavy run support early in the contest. In the top of the first with two outs, Johnson dropped down a perfect bunt single on the third base line followed by Sam Baier lacing a single over the head of the Umary second baseman. Kuzemka then sent a lined shot over the left field fence for his fourth homer of the season and a 3-0 Viking lead.
In the top of the second, freshman infielder Max Mosser led off with a single and advanced to third on an error. Mosser then scored on an RBI double in the left-center gap off the bat of junior infielder JT Mix. Mix later came around to score on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Carter Howell.
Up 5-0 in the top of the third, Augustana took a 7-0 lead on a two-run homer off the bat of freshman catcher Drey Dirksen, his first longball of the season.
Down 7-0, the Marauders scratched three runs across in the bottom half of the third. Kuzemka then tallied an RBI single in the top half of the fifth, before UMary scored once in the bottom of the sixth.
Leading 8-4, the Vikings received RBI singles from Johnson and Baier in the top of the seventh inning. Augustana scored its 11th and final run of the game in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout from Howell.
Down 11-4, UMary did attempt to mount a late comeback with two runs in the eight and three in the ninth while bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth inning. Junior righty Thomas Bruss, however, shut the door by striking out the side in the ninth, earning a save and securing the victory.
Overall, Kuzemka tallied three hits in game two while Howell, Johnson, Baier and Rosencranz wound up with two apiece. Dirksen, Mosser and Mix all finished with one hit.
