PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team (28-16, 11-4 A-10) picked up its 28th win of the season in a doubleheader split with Saint Joseph's on Senior Day Saturday at Hank DeVincent Field. It's the second most wins in program history.

La Salle honored its eight seniors before the games – Ryan Guckin, Colin Scanlon, Jack Cucinotta, Colin Kennedy, Tommy Toal, Mike Jenkins, James Kelly and Alfonse Sadallah.

Game 1 – La Salle 8, Saint Joseph's 3 (F/7)

  • The Explorers got on the board quickly, with junior Tatem Levins scoring on an RBI single by classmate Nick O'Day for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Saint Joseph's evened the score, but it was short-lived, as La Salle scored twice in the second inning to go back in front. Sophomore Connor Coolahan put the Explorers ahead with an RBI single through the left side and Levins made it 3-1 with an RBI single of his own two batters later.
  • La Salle extended its advantage in the third, sparked by an RBI double down the left field line from Cucinotta. Sadallah then dug into the batter's box and lifted his first career home run over the wall in right to open up a 6-1 lead.
  • The seniors continued to come up big on Senior Day, with Guckin adding to the total in the fourth with a solo homer to right field, his fourth of the year, making it 7-1.
  • The Explorers would later open up a seven-run lead in the fifth on an RBI single to center field by Levins, scoring Sadallah.
  • Saint Joe's added two runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, but freshman right-hander Frank Elissalt finished off his complete-game outing for the seven-inning win.
Game 2 – Saint Joseph's 4, La Salle 3 (F/7)
  • The Hawks went ahead early in the second game, plating home four runs over the first two innings, capped off by an Andrew Cossetti homer.
  • Levins brought the Explorers back within a run in the third though, cranking his sixth home run of the season down the right field line, a three-run shot that made it 4-3.
  • But La Salle couldn't quite get it going against the Hawks' Hayden Seig, who fired three scoreless innings of relief to close out the win for the road team.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • La Salle is now 28-16, tying the 2011 team for the second-most wins in the program. That's just three away from the school record of 31, held by the 1985 Explorers that made the NCAA tournament. The Explorers maintained their position in first place in the Atlantic 10 North standings with the split, now at 11-4 in the conference.
  • Levins had an impressive day at the plate, going 5-for-6 with the homer, five RBI, two runs, a double and a walk. Levins was 3-for-4 in the first game, while Guckin, Sadallah and freshman Will Binder each had two hits apiece in the win.
  • Elissalt (6-2) threw 126 pitches while striking out 10 and scattering two earned runs on six hits over his 7.0 innings. With 86 strikeouts now on the year, he stands alone in third place on the program's single-season strikeouts list. The Miami native is also now in a tie with senior Colin Scanlon and eight others for seventh in the program for single-season wins.
  • Sophomore left-hander Jordan Morales struck out a career-high nine batters in the second game, while senior Colin Kennedy struck out a pair in a scoreless inning of relief.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will look to win the series on Sunday in their home finale at Hank DeVincent Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
