WILMINGTON, N.C. – A pair of home runs in the sixth allowed Charleston to break a 1-1 tie as Elon University baseball dropped its CAA tournament game 6-2 on Friday, May 28 at UNCW's Brooks Field. The Phoenix finished the 2021 season with a 22-22 overall record.
"Tough way to go out," said head coach Mike Kennedy. "Great outing by Jared Wetherbee, just couldn't put together timely hitting with guys on base. Played some really good baseball down the stretch, so obviously disappointed in how the tournament played out. Really liked the effort these guys put forth and believe if we can get healthy on the mound our future is bright!"
ON THE MOUND
Kyle Greenler (1-5) took the loss after getting tagged for four runs on four hits in 0.1 inning of relief. He recorded one strikeout in the outing. Wetherbee held the Cougars (27-24) to one run in a 5.0-inning start. He allowed five hits, didn't issue a walk and struck out three. Joe Sprake threw 2.2 innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits with no walks and two punch outs.
AT THE PLATE
Cole Reynolds led the maroon and gold with a 3-for-3 day at the plate. The true freshman had one double and was also hit by a pitch. Alex Iadisernia also doubled in a 2-for-5 performance and added a run scored. Tyler Cranston hit 1-for-3, Adam Spurlin and Nick Cicci both batted 1-for-4, and Anthony Galason finished 1-for-5. Cicci scored once while Galason and Cranston each drove in a run.
THE RUNDOWN
CofC's Trotter Harlan led off the bottom of the first with a hit to right center and advanced to third on a Harrison Hawkins double down the left-field line. Harlan then scored on a Tanner Steffy ground out back to Wetherbee as the Cougars jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. Elon pulled even in the third as Iadisernia hit a two-out double down the left-field line and came around on a Galason single to left.
Both teams had plays at the plate that went to review in the fourth inning. With runners in scoring position, Spurlin hit a ball back to the pitcher as Reynolds looked to slide under the throw to home. He was ruled out on the play and the call was upheld upon review. In the home half of the frame, Ari Sechopoulos stood on first as Landon Choboy hit an 0-2 pitch to center. The ball was bobbled by Galason, but Elon was able to throw out Sechopoulos at home to keep the score even at 1-1.
The Cougars broke open the game with a pair of long balls in the sixth. Hawkins' two-run shot to left allowed CofC to retake the lead, 3-1. Steffy and Sechopoulos then strung together back-to-back hits before Choboy connected on a 2-0 pitch. The three-run home run made it 6-1.
Elon got back a run in the eighth. Cicci led off with a base on balls and Reynolds followed with a single to center field. Cicci then moved up to third on a Garrett Stonehouse fly out to right to put runners on the corners. Cranston reached on a fielder's choice and Cicci crossed the plate as the ball got past the CofC third baseman, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Spurlin singled through the right side to load the bases with one out, but Willie Havens struck out swinging and J.P. Sponseller lined out to first base.
