Purdue Basketball All-Time Great Draft - VOTING - Hammer and Rails

Well, the draft is now over and the benches are filled. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can catch up here and here. The each team will be listed below before all the GMs get to make their case about why their team is the best. Let us know in the comments who you think won the draft.

Andrew:

  1. Glenn Robinson
  2. John Wooden
  3. Stretch Murphy
  4. David Teague
  5. Carl Landry
  6. Brian Cardinal
  7. Kenny Lowe
  8. Ryan Cline
  9. Tony Jones
  10. Dru Anthrop

My argument is this. If we draft based only on what these guys would be able to do in today’s games we miss out on so many great players. My thinking, and I said this on the podcast, is that I’m drafting based on dominance in their era. Guys like Wooden and Murphy racked up honors during their time at Purdue. Murphy was a defensive and offensive force in his day. He is in the basketball hall of fame. He’s a 2 time All-American and was named to the All-time All-American team! How can you call a guy with those accolades a bad draft pick? We can’t forgot our history. Wooden was a 3 time All-American! The first player to ever do that! He was the national player of the year! Add to those two, Glenn Robinson who was the most dominant player of his time winning both the Naismith and the Wooden awards UNANIMOUSLY! These are possibly the three most dominant players Purdue has ever had and they are all on my team. Regardless of when they played or what era they were in these guys were dominant!

I’ve got defense with guys like Teague, Cardinal, and Lowe. I’ve got scappiness in Dru Anthrop and I’ve got a great distributor in Tony Jones. There’s nothing my team can’t do.

Also, Travis drafted Stephanie White, who, great player don’t get me wrong, but on the podcast at least 4 times (yes, I counted) I called it the Purdue Men’s Basketball All-Time great draft. So there’s that.

Kyle:

  1. Joe Barry Carroll
  2. Terry Dischinger
  3. Dave Schellhase
  4. Lewis Jackson
  5. Troy Lewis
  6. Cuonzo Martin
  7. Raphael Davis
  8. Brad Miller
  9. Matt Waddell
  10. Tommy Luce

My team is the best team of all time and Travis sucks. (editor’s note: I promise this is all he sent me.)

Casey:

  1. Rick Mount
  2. Robbie Hummel
  3. Chris Kramer
  4. A.J. Hammons
  5. Everette Stephens
  6. Jaden Ivey
  7. Vincent Edwards
  8. Dakota Mathias
  9. Trevion Williams
  10. Bobby “Buckets” Riddell

There’s no way around it. Modern basketball and all the valued skills that come with it reign supreme. That’s why mount was still a first round pick. Put him in a lineup with a sharpshooting 6’8 power forward like Robbie Hummel and you’re guaranteed to have a dominant offense no matter who else is on the floor.

It allowed to pick up defensive minded players like Hammons and Kramer who will hold down the paint and perimeter. There’s no one on this team that can’t shoot and pass. Tre might average twenty assists chucking the ball around to all the shooters on the floor. Jaden Ivey will be able to attack guards that lack size or athleticism and Vincent Edwards provides the all around versatility to fill in at any spot.

Travis:

  1. Carsen Edwards
  2. E’Twaun Moore
  3. JaJuan Johnson
  4. Bruce Parkinson
  5. Caleb “Biggie” Swanigan
  6. Chad Austin
  7. Jaraan Cornell
  8. Isaac Haas
  9. Stephanie White
  10. Grady Eifert

It is weird to defend my team as a basketball curmudgeon and the old man here, but I love the spacing my team can create. I have two excellent bigs to go with the greatest distributor in school history, one of the best rebounders in school history, and the two best all around guards in school history. E’Twaun Moore and Carsen Edwards scored more than 4,000 points combined in their careers. To me it is no contest, and I will defend my Stephanie White pick to the death (though I could have picked Katie Douglas instead).
