AURORA | A clerical worker with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested on suspicion of raping an underage female acquaintance, authorities announced Friday.
Investigators arrested Caleb May, 19, Thursday morning on suspicion of sexual assault and false imprisonment charges stemming from an incident on May 3, according to Ginger Delgado, spokesperson for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.
Delgado said that a girl under the age of 18 contacted authorities on May 5 to report that May had sexually assaulted her two days prior.
May is currently employed with the local sheriff’s office as a community services specialist tasked with taking reports for menial calls that are lodged without any information on possible suspects. He was also a member of the office’s explorer program, a volunteer course available to high school students interested in pursuing a career in policing.
The girl he is accused of assaulting had also participated in the Explorer program with May, according to court documents released Friday afternoon. The girl told detectives that May had repeatedly made advances toward her in the past, and she had repeatedly told him that she was not interested in dating him.
The arrest affidavit filed against May revealed that he is accused of assaulting the girl while the pair were in her car in the parking lot of a Centennial King Soopers shortly before 12 p.m. on May 3.
The girl told investigators that May got into the passenger seat of her car, pulled her toward him, put his hands down her pants and fondled her buttocks and genitals.
She said that May told her “just let me do it,” as she tried to pry herself away from his grasp. May eventually exited the girl’s car and told her “you know I just made your day,” she told authorities.
May is a civilian and has no arresting authority, though he was wearing a uniform provided by the sheriff’s office at the time of the alleged assault, officials said. He also drove to the King Soopers in a vehicle emblazoned with officials sheriff’s office markings, he told police.
May later admitted to the assault in an interview with a sheriff’s deputy on May 6, according to the arrest document.
“He stated that he knew what he was doing was wrong,” according to the affidavit.
May has been placed on unpaid administrative leave from his current role with the sheriff’s office while his criminal case moves forward.
He has already made his first appearance in district court, and he is scheduled to appear again at 8:30 a.m. on May 11, according to county records.
May is currently being held at the Arapahoe County jail in Centennial on felony charges related to “sexual assault – sodomy – girl – strongarm,” according to county records. Deputies have recommended charging him with one felony count of sexual assault and the misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment.
He remains incarcerated in lieu of posting a $65,000 cash or surety bond.
