Track and Field Colonels Ready to Make Noise at OVC Outdoor Championships

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University track and field teams will compete at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships May 13-15 at O'Brien Field in Charleston, Illinois.
 
All three days of the meet will stream live on ESPN+.
 
Multi events get started around 10:00 a.m. ET on Thursday. The meet will wrap up on Saturday with the 4x400 meter relays around 5:10 p.m. ET.

The EKU women are in position to score significant points in the sprint events, thanks to the duo of sophomore Quantasia Perry and freshman Kayla Smith.
 
Smith is ranked No. 1 in the OVC in the 100 meters (school-record 11.53) and No. 6 in the 200 meters (24.20). Perry is currently No. 3 in both the 100 meters (11.66) and 200 meters (24.05).
 
The women's 4x100 meter relay team – comprised of Perry, Smith and freshmen Emily Roesser and Christian "Joy" Scott – comes in at No. 3 in the conference with a time of 45.69. The squad will be hunting the EKU record of 45.59 on Saturday.
 
Sophomore Lou Trois is the top-ranked individual in the women's 1,500 meters. She comes in with an OVC-best time of 4:23.2 Freshmen Laura Taborda (4:27.6 / No. 3) and Anouk van Gils (4:35.4 / No. 6) could also be in contention for a medal in that race.
 
The women will look to score major points in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday. Taborda (school-record 10:22.0 / No. 2), van Gils (10:55.2 / No. 3), and junior Saskia Pingpank (10:57.5 / No. 4) all sit near the top of the conference leaderboard in that event.
 
Junior Jeanne Reix Charat is currently ranked No. 3 in the conference in the 5,000 meters (17:09.0) and will look to score points in both the 5K and 10K.
 
Freshman Emma García-Palencia will compete in her first OVC heptathlon at the meet. She took silver in the pentathlon at the 2020 OVC Indoor Championships.

The EKU men are poised to score a substantial chunk of points in the steeplechase. The Colonels own three of the top four times in the conference this season. Ahmed Jaziri leads the way with a school-record and NCAA-leading time of 8:32.9. Freshman Pedro García-Palencia is No. 2 in the conference at 8:54.8. Freshman Nikodem Dworczak is No. 4 at 9:21.8.
 
Two Colonels are positioned in the OVC top-five in the 1,500 meters – Joan Tapias (No. 3 / 3:47.1) and Jackson Siddall (No. 5 / 3:49.8).
 
Freshman Alex Leshan should find himself in contention in the 800 meters (No. 4 / 1:51.0).
 
Sophomore Bryce Favors-Charleston comes in ranked No. 10 in the conference in the 100 meters (10.83). He won bronze in that event at the 2019 outdoor championships.
 
Freshman Charles Kipchumba will look to score points in the 5,000 meters (No. 8 / 14:31.2) and the 10,000 meters.
 
In the field events, senior Branden Brookfield (No. 4 in the pole vault / 15-6.25), freshman Roderick Flint (No. 5 in the high jump / 6-4.75), and junior Samuel Carter (No. 6 in the triple jump / 47-5) could vie for points.

Following the OVC Championships, qualified Colonels will compete at the NCAA East Preliminaries May 27-29 in Jacksonville, Florida.
