“It’s okay to be not OK!” That’s the message Hannah and Charlie Lucas want to spread through their app notOK
. This free mobile application acts as a mental health SOS button for teens in distress that notifies trusted contacts when they feel vulnerable and want help. The idea came from Hannah, who had been struggling with depression and anxiety. Her younger brother Charlie helped her bring the app to life with the coding skills he had recently learned in summer camp.
In this live-streamed conversation, Hannah and Charlie will discuss their journey of designing and developing their app. The two siblings will also talk about opportunities and resources for teens who are struggling with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, particularly during the pandemic. Join us on Tuesday, May 18, from 5 –6pm EDT during the NYC Youth Action Call to learn from these inspiring young developers.
About Hannah and Charlie Lucas
Hannah suffers from postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), a condition that causes her to faint. When she was 15, fears related to her syndrome spiraled into anxiety and depression, which led to self-harm. After getting professional treatment, Hannah pursued coding and entrepreneurship classes, which empowered her to see her vision through, together with her brother, Charlie.
After witnessing his sister’s struggles, Charlie wanted to do something to help. When Hannah told him about the idea for notOK, Charlie stepped in to lead tech development and support. He wireframed the app’s basic premise and devised the workflow. Charlie also manages ongoing updates, design ideas, and further developer approvals. He’s now working on the prototype for their next app.
