Euro 2020 group standings, tiebreaker rules and advancement scenarios - The Washington Post

erotoko.blogspot.com

With the third and final round of Euro 2020 group-stage play set to begin Sunday, here’s a look at where things stand in each group as we look ahead to the knockout round. As a reminder: The first- and second-place teams in each group qualify for the knockout round, along with the top four third-place teams.

All times Eastern.

Here’s the group-stage tiebreaker procedure, as explained by UEFA. Teams get three points for a win and one point for a draw, and the team with the most points wins the group. If two or more teams are tied in points at the end of group play, ties are broken via the following:

  1. Greatest number of points accrued in the matches between the tied teams.
  2. Goal difference in the matches played between the tied teams.
  3. Goals scored in the matches played between the tied teams.

If those tiebreakers fail to break all the deadlocks, they are applied only to the teams that remain tied. If that does not break the tie, the following are applied:

  1. Goal difference in all group matches.
  2. Goals scored in all group matches.
  3. Wins in all group matches.
  4. Lower quantity of disciplinary points. Players are given three points for a red card (either directly or as a result of receiving two yellow cards in one match) and one point for a yellow card.
  5. Position in the European qualifier rankings.

  • Switzerland will be eliminated from knockout-round contention with a loss to Turkey. It can finish in second place with a win and a Wales loss, though it would have to overcome a significant overall goal-differential deficit (the two teams tied, 1-1, on June 12).
  • Turkey cannot finish first or second and must defeat Switzerland by a sizable margin to possibly qualify for the knockout round as a third-place team.

Czech Republic vs. England (Tuesday, 3 p.m., ESPN)

Croatia vs. Scotland (Tuesday, 3 p.m., ESPN2)

  • Czech Republic will finish first in the group with a win or draw against England, based on its superior goal differential. Even with a loss, the Czechs will finish second unless Croatia beats Scotland and overtakes them in goal differential.

Germany vs. Hungary (Wednesday, 3 p.m., ESPN2)

Portugal vs. France (Wednesday, 3 p.m., ESPN)

  • France will advance if it beats or draws with Portugal, or if Germany and Hungary draw. Les Bleus will finish first in the group if they win, or if they draw and Hungary beats Germany. If France loses and Hungary wins, second place will be decided by goal differential, since France and Hungary played to a draw.
  • Germany will advance by beating Hungary. Germany can finish atop the group with a win and a France loss to Portugal. Germany will finish third if it draws Hungary and Portugal beats France, or if it loses to Hungary and Portugal loses to France.
  • Portugal will go through with a win against France, or a draw and a German loss to Hungary. If Portugal wins and Germany does not, it will finish first. But if it loses to France and Hungary beats Germany, Portugal would finish fourth.
  • Hungary needs a win over Germany and a Portugal loss to France to finish second. It could still finish second on goal differential with a win over Germany and a Portugal win. Hungary will finish third if it wins and France and Portugal play to a draw.

Third-place standings

The top four third-place teams will be determined by group-stage points, with goal difference, goals scored, wins, disciplinary points and European qualifying standings serving as tiebreakers.
