MARSHALL — A transportation budget agreement approved by the Minnesota Legislature this week is good news for area communities, state lawmakers said.

The budget bill includes a total of $30 million for road projects in small cities and townships, they said.

“This is probably the strongest transportation bill we’ve had in many years when it comes to small cities and townships,” said Sen. Gary Dahms, R-Redwood Falls. That support is crucial because small communities don’t have the same kind of tax base to draw on as larger cities to maintain roads and bridges, he said.

Rep. Chris Swedzinski, R-Ghent, said Friday that the transportation bill provides $12 million in funding for townships and $18 million in aid for cities with fewer than 5,000 residents. Lyon County is set to receive an estimated total of $208,814 for road projects in small cities, Swedzinski’s office said. Redwood County would receive an estimated $223,572; Yellow Medicine County an estimated $144,691; and Lac qui Parle County an estimated $139,702.

Swedzinski said the final version of the transportation package also removed $1.6 billion in tax increases in the House Democrats’ transportation bill.

“It is good to see the finished product for this bill allows us to uphold roads and bridges as the priorities they are without raising taxes on Minnesotans at a time the state has a multi-billion-dollar surplus,” Swedzinski said. “This bill is much improved over the one House Democrats brought to the floor in April that failed to reach enactment.”

“Nearly every aspect of our daily life and state economy relies on Minnesota having an efficient transportation system,” Sen. Bill Weber, R-Luvurne, said. “This session, Senate Republicans are continuing our commitment to roads and bridges by investing billions more into infrastructure without raising your taxes.”

Swedzinski said the transportation bill also includes $213 million in trunk highway bonding authorized in fiscal year 2022, and an additional $100 million in each year of the 2024-25 biennium for the Corridors of Commerce program.
