Over the weekend, Pitt was finally able to conduct its first official visit for a prospect in over a year due to COVID restrictions, hosting four star combo guard Judah Mintz and his family for two nights.
“My favorite part was meeting the coaches,” Mintz told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “It was really nice to see them in person. You get a feel for people over the phone and stuff, but meeting people in person and being able to spend time with them, it’s just a lot different. Their staff is really cool. My family really got along with them.”
After a noteworthy performance at the Pitt Jam Fest AAU tournament in late April, Jeff Capel called Mintz and offered him a scholarship. Capel had been recruiting Mintz for several months before the offer, and has clearly established a strong relationship with the talented guard.
“Genuine,” was the word Mintz used to describe Capel. “I think genuine would be a good word for him. He’s pretty nice. He got along with my family just fine. They liked him, he liked them, so, it was a really good experience meeting him and spending some time with him.”
While Mintz had been to the Pittsburgh area before to play in tournaments, he had never really seen Oakland, and especially now with COVID-related restrictions easing up, he finally got to see what the neighborhood had to offer.
“I went to Pittsburgh for Pitt Jam Fest, but this was different,” he said. “Oakland was a lot different since it’s whole campus, really. Since COVID restrictions are being lifted as we speak, it is a lot more open than when I first went. It was pretty nice. I liked the city.”
Mintz, who is the No. 91 player in the nation according to 247 Sports, added that he is planning to commit to a college in late fall or early winter. While on this visit to Pitt, he got a taste of college ball and practiced in the Pitt facilities with a few current Panthers, including Femi Odukale, Dan Oladapo, and Ithiel Horton, among others.
“Everything was state-of-the-art, of course,” he continued. “I liked the color schemes, everything about it was really just nice. I know they’re working on a practice facility coming up, so yeah. I got to hoop with some of the guys, too, so everything about it was pretty nice.
