ST. LOUIS – A trio of Redbird student-athletes were named as Spring 2021 recipients for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award, the league office announced Tuesday morning. Illinois State softball's Kenzie Pence, women's basketball's Paige Saylor, and soccer's Natalie Vaughn-Low were among 30 MVC student-athletes recognized for the award.
Pence, a native of St. Joseph, Illinois, hold an impressive 4.00 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a Finance major. The rising senior has seen limited action due to injury, but has made a lasting impact in the Bloomington-Normal community by serving as the softball team's community service representative during the 2019-20 school year. She is also an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and has been recognized with the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award for her success in the classroom.
Saylor, a native of Martinsville, Indiana, graduated with a 3.97 GPA with a degree in Physiology, Neuroscience and Behavior this May. The senior wrapped up her four-year career as a Redbird in March, helping Illinois State women's basketball to its first postseason appearance in eight years at the WNIT. A two-time MVC All-Defensive Team selection, Saylor averaged 6.3 points per contest and led the team with 71 assists on the year.
Vaughn-Low, a native of DeKalb, Illinois, carries a 3.88 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science. The senior saw limited action this spring due to injury after earning All-MVC Second Team, MVC All-Tournament Team and MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honors during the 2019 season. The forward enters the fall 2021 season having tallied 10 goals and 10 assists so far in her four-year career.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service. The Valley recognizes 30 student-athletes annually. Institutions select their State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award honorees.
