Inside Hayward Field, the Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw one member of the Eagle family punch their ticket to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo Sunday, June 20. Volunteer Coach Tori Franklin, who qualified in the triple jump, will extend Eastern's streak of having an Olympian in every Summer Games since 1960 continues.

"I'm so proud of the way Tori competed this weekend," said Associate Head Coach Sterling Roberts. "Tokyo-Bound for her first Olympics! Very exciting! We're so lucky to have her as a coach and a role model here at Eastern Michigan, and she just added another chapter to our Olympic tradition!"

Franklin dominated in the triple jump where she placed second overall with a leap of 14.36m. In the qualifying round, the Westmont, Ill. native reached a distance of 13.84m for third to put her through to the finals, June 18. Last night, Franklin improved upon that mark multiple times, reaching 14.20m in her third jump of the afternoon. The former Spartan moved on to the final three jumps after placing in the top-eight, ultimately executing a bound of 14.36m for second, punching her ticket to Tokyo.

Last weekend, former Eagle Brittni Mason kicked off the summer festivities for EMU by putting her athleticism on full display at the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials in Minneapolis, Minn., June 18-19. On Friday June 18, Mason competed in the T45/47 200m dash where she crossed the finish line in 25.14 for the win. The Richmond Heights, Ohio native went on to capture the 100m crown in the T12/38/45/46 race in a 12.05 clip. Mason will now wait until Wednesday to see if she'll make Team USA.

Meanwhile, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) took on the best in the U.S. in the high jump, June 18. The All-American had three great attempts at 1.77m, but ultimately could not clear the height. 2016 graduate Solomon Simmons represented EMU in the decathlon where he placed eighth overall with 8037 points, June 19-20. Despite coming back from an injury, the Murrieta, Calif. native managed to record top-five finishes in four events, including a runner-up placement in the javelin throw (63.26m).

Simmons' former teammate, Donald Scott, also made the trip to Eugene, Ore. where he participated in the triple jump. In the opening round, the Apopka, Fla. native registered a bound of 16.81m, the second-best mark of the day, to qualify him for the finals, June 19. The men's triple jump final is set for tonight, June 21, at 7:40 p.m. ET. Lastly, former Eagle Willy Fink is set to compete at Hayward Field on Thursday, June 24 in the 5000m race. Currently, the Virginia Tech volunteer coach boasts a personal-best time of 13:17.15. The first round of the 5000m is scheduled for 11:04 p.m.
