Hurricanes update roster with flurry of moves - Canes Country

As the Hurricanes look to get their opening night roster down to 23 players and maximize their cap situation, the team announced a slew of roster moves Monday: Max Lajoie, Eric Gelinas, Stefan Noesen, C.J. Smith and Josh Levio cleared waivers and were assigned to AHL Chicago, Jake Gardiner was placed on long-term injured reserve, Vincent Trocheck was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 3, Eetu Makineimi was recalled from AHL Chicago and Jamieson Rees was placed on the injured non roster list.

A few thoughts/notes on this roster:

• This is obviously not quite a finished product. The name of the game was maximizing the cap relief the Hurricanes would get from placing Gardiner on long-term IR. In order to do so, they had to get a full $4.05 million over the cap today. Placing Trocheck on IR and recalling another player (Makiniemi) helped them get as close as possible to that goal.
• Players only have to stay on injured reserve for seven days, and since Trocheck’s is retroactive to Oct. 3 (he was injured in the team’s red-white scrimmage), he’s eligible to be activated whenever. He’s been practicing, and the team is hopeful he’ll play Thursday. Given the cap maneuvering going on here, the odds seem good Trocheck will be good to go. I’d assume Makineimi will be sent down once he’s activated.
• The two headliners here are obviously Seth Jarvis and Jack Drury making the roster. With the Hurricanes’ depth up front, any prospects were going to have to have a very good camp and blow the doors off to start with the big club. Both did it with their preseason performances. Both players practiced Monday, and Rod Brind’Amour referred to the group as “our guys.”
• Things are relatively straight forward with Drury, who can be sent back and forth between the Hurricanes and AHL Chicago. Jarvis, on the other hand, has to either play in the NHL or go back to his junior team in Portland due to his age (19) and the NHL-CHL agreement. The team does, however, have the option of playing him for nine games to evaluate him before sending him back without burning a year of his entry-level contract. It sounds like the team will at least give him that chance to further prove himself. “He deserved it,” Brind’Amour told members of the media after Monday’s practice. “It’s pretty much that simple.” When asked it Jarvis would play some games, Brind’Amour said “Yeah, I think so. Everything’s up in the air with him, right now, I think is the best way to put it. He’s certainly shown that he’s not out of place in the preseason games. So he deserves to be here.”
• Two of the players who were waived and sent down, C.J. Smith and Stefan Noesen, both had very strong camps and should be near the top of the injury call-up list. The Hurricanes have more organizational depth than they’ve probably ever had right now, and the Wolves should have a stacked roster this year.
• The official submission of the team’s 23-man roster pretty much signifies the end of training camp. Up next is the real thing and the Hurricanes’ home opener against the New York Islanders Thursday at 7 p.m.
