I don’t know about you but I was very surprised when I received the notification on my phone that A.J. Preller had traded for Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Adam Frazier. The Padres, at the time, already had a full infield composed of Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth, and Eric Hosmer so it wasn’t clear where Frazier was going to play.
Some fans were expecting that Preller had another trade involving Eric Hosmer lined up so Frazer would know that he was starting at second base every day. That, of course, didn’t happen, which led to some uneasiness in the clubhouse.
To make matters worse, Frazier wasn’t the same hitter that he was with the Pirates after he arrived in San Diego. The 29-year-old led the league in hits at the time of the trade and hit .324 with 28 doubles in 98 games with the Buccos to start off his season. However, he would only hit .267 with eight doubles in 57 games with San Diego at the end of his 2021 campaign. Frazier compiled 3 Wins Above Replacement with the Pirates but only compiled one win with the Friars.
Perhaps you could attribute some of Frazier’s struggles to him having to focus more on defense early on in his Padres tenure since the Padres tried putting him out in left field in order to get his bat in the lineup. That didn’t work out great, as you’ll see if you watch the video below.
Frazier is under control for the 2022 season before hitting the free agent market. Frazier has a history of hitting for average (he’s hit over .300 twice in his six year career) so fans shouldn’t expect him to continue to underwhelm offensively when it comes to getting on base. This will probably be Frazier’s final season with the Padres and then San Diego will hand over the reigns to C.J. Abrams if all works out the way they plan it to. If Abrams suffers a set back next season in the minors, then the Padres have Cronenworth, Jurickson Profar, and Ha-seong Kim who can play second base in 2023.
