MONMOUTH, Ore. – Thursday's matchup between the Western Oregon University women's soccer team and Northwest Nazarene in Monmouth will showcase a pair of teams separated by just a few points in the conference standings as both teams battle to try and make the conference tournament. WOU will close the week on Saturday against Central Washington, as both matches will start at 2 p.m. at the WOU Soccer Field.
WOU enters the week 4-6-2 overall and 3-3-2 in GNAC play, collecting 11 conference points. That currently leaves the Wolves fifth in the standings, as the top-four teams advance to the GNAC Championships at the end of the regular season. WOU is just one point back of Simon Fraser in fourth and two points back of Northwest Nazarene in third. Western Washington leads the way with 21 points, followed by Seattle Pacific in second with 19 points. Montana State Billings is currently sixth with eight points, Saint Martin's is seventh with six points and Central Washington in eighth with three points.
The Wolves responded last time out with a 2-1 win at home over Saint Martin's. Jenna Efraimson and Alyssa Talkington picked up the goals for the Wolves, as the teams scored all three goals in the game over the final three minutes of regulation in a wild ending. There are six games left in the regular season, as WOU will play three both at home and on the road.
On the season, WOU has 12 goals on 135 total shots, with 57 landing on goal. They have 12 assists and 64 corner kicks. Opponents have 16 goals on 156 total shots, with 63 landing on goal. Opponents have 12 assists and 60 corner kicks.
Piper Matson leads the team with seven points, tallying three goals and an assist. Jada Foster is second on the team with six points off of three goals, which includes two game-winning goals. Chloe Smith and Talkington each have four points, with Smith recording four assists and Talkington with two goals, including her game-winner from Saturday's game. Erika Gonzalez Moreno and Lilly Nowatzke are tied with three points apiece and Efraimson, Kaytlyn Larsen, Liz Parker and Hannah Rispler all have two points apiece. Briana Kubli has a point on the season.
Foster leads the team in minutes played having eclipsed 1,000 over the weekend and sits at 1,053. Smith is second with 951 and Moreno Gonzalez is third at 949. Rispler gives the Wolves four with at least 900 minutes sitting at 929.
In goal, all three have seen time this season in Darien Walton, Emily Wheeler and Olivia Holdenried. Wheeler has played 548 minutes, tallying two wins and two ties, along with 24 saves and both a shutout and combined shutout. Walton has logged 450 minutes, picking up a win and a shutout, along with 20 saves. Holdenried grabbed the win in her first collegiate start against Saint Martin's and has three saves on the season and a combined shutout.
WOU is ranked fourth in the GNAC in assists per game (1.17), 95th nationally, points per game (3.33), saves per game (4.50), scoring offense per game (1.08), shutout percentage (.250), total assists (14), total goals (13) and total points (40).
Individually, Chloe Smith, Jada Foster, Erika Gonzalez Moreno, Darien Walton and Emily Wheeler all rank in the top-10 in the GNAC in several categories.
Smith is second in the GNAC and 37th nationally in total assists and fourth in the GNAC and 71st nationally in assists per game (0.38). Foster is third in the GNAC and 73rd nationally in game-winning goals. Gonzalez Moreno is fifth in the GNAC in total assists. In goal, Walton is eighth in the GNAC and Wheeler is ninth in the GNAC in total saves.
Last time WOU and NNU played back on Oct. 9 in Nampa the Wolves battled back twice to tie the game and eventually earn the 2-2 draw. NNU held a 15-12 edge in shots, with both teams tallying eight shots on goal. Talkington and Larsen had the goals in the game for the Wolves.
The Nighthawks are 6-3-2 on the season and 4-3-1 in GNAC play, currently riding a two-game winning streak. NNU won both games last week on the road by 1-0 scores against Montana State Billings and Central Washington.
On the season, NNU has 16 goals on 156 shots, with 76 landing on goal. They have 14 assists and 66 corner kicks. Opponents have 13 goals on 156 shots, with 82 landing on goal. Opponents have 15 assists and 49 corner kicks.
Madison Grande leads the Nighthawks with nine points, tallying four goals. McKenzie Buell, Ashley Parton and Makayla Roggow all have five points on the season with two goals and an assist. Two players have played over 1,000 minutes in Kate Bleffert (1,015) and Chandler Kaufmann (1,000). In goal, Alexis Montoya has started all 11 games, tallying five shutouts, one combined shutout and 68 saves in 978 minutes.
WOU has gone 12-5-2 at home against NNU since 2000.
The Wolves close the week against Central Washington on Saturday. During the previous meeting on Oct. 7 in Ellensburg, WOU cruised to the 3-0 victory with Foster, Matson and Parker all recording goals. WOU held a 14-10 edge in shots, including 9-4 on goal.
Central Washington is 2-10 overall and 1-7 in GNAC play on the season. The Wildcats picked up their first conference win of the season on Oct. 9 with a 4-1 home win over Saint Martin's. This past week, CWU lost to both Seattle Pacific (7-0) and Northwest Nazarene (1-0).
On the season, CWU has 12 goals on 115 shots, with 59 landing on goal. They have nine assists and 33 corner kicks. Opponents have 41 goals on 219 shots, with 130 landing on goal. Opponents also have 33 assists and 86 corner kicks.
Sydney Lowe and Makinzie Packwood lead the team with seven points apiece. Lowe leads the team in goals with three. Casey Park adds five points. Paige Devine has played the most minutes with 970. In goal, Liz Canton and Megan Fox have split most of the games on the season. Canton has logged 585 minutes, with a win and 53 saves, while Fox has played 463 minutes and has a win with 31 saves.
WOU is 9-5-5 at home against the Wildcats since 2000.
