The Rangers, Cubs and Giants are among teams showing interest in Michael Conforto. …
It’ll be interesting to see if the Giants go for another Scott Boras client, and this one coming off a known shoulder injury. Carlos Correa has played three straight seasons without any long absences and wouldn’t have seemed to be a candidate to have a serious issue come up in a physical. (The Giants aren’t saying what about the physical caused them not to do the deal).
The Giants as an organization have an excellent reputation and it would also be hard to see them having buyer’s remorse to the point of backing away from a deal when one of their main goals this winter was to sign a big-name payer to excite the fan base. Giants people understand that while Mitch Haniger, Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling are fine players, the fans are only going to recall this winter for their failure to sign the big star. Perhaps baseball president Farhan Zaidi was right that it’s hard to recruit players who aren’t from the Bay Area to San Francisco.
Aaron Judge was their best fit. But based on Judge’s comments at his press conference, it was going to be very hard for him to leave the Yankees, even for outrageous money. The Giants’ $360M offer was a strong one, and forced the Yankees to go higher. …
By landing Correa, Brett Baty becomes immediate trade bait for the Mets. The Marlins make sense and have young pitching to deal. …
Several first basemen remain free, including Yuri Gurriel, Wil Myers, Trey Mancini, Miguel Sano, Brandon Belt and the just-released Eric Hosmer. The versatility of Mancini and Myers may give them a slight edge. …
While some were shocked by Joey Gallo’s $11M deal with the Twins, he should benefit by 1) being in a non-NY/LA market and 2) the banning of the shift.
Max Kepler, who seems to be available, is among the leaders of the shifted/shafted and also should benefit from the ban.
Corey Seager lost more hits than anyone to the shift last year at 47 — which by some accounting was 20 more than anyone else. …
Coincidental that Hendricks (Kyle) and Hendriks (Liam) are available Chicagoans. …
Adam Ottavino had the chance to go back to the Rockies before re-upping with the Mets. Perfect for the Manhattan native, Brooklyn product and Westchester resident. …
The Phillies have long liked free agent Zack Britton, and there are Orioles connections in that front office. Mets manager Buck Showalter managed Britton for his best years.
