AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Seniors Kevin Chaimowitz and Colin Kelly combined for four home runs and nine runs batted in as the Union College baseball team got its 2021 season started with a bang on Saturday afternoon, defeating Vassar College by the scores of 8-1 and 10-5 at Shuttleworth Park.

Union (2-0) hit five homers as a team on Saturday, as the Dutchmen teed off on the Brewer pitching staff. Chaimowitz led the way by going 4-for-6 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored, while Kelly added a pair of long balls, drove in four and scored four times. Fellow senior William Bellamy also homered and drove in two as part of a 3-for-5 day with two walks.

Game 1: Union 8, Vassar 1

The Dutchmen did almost all their damage via the long ball in game one, scoring seven of their eight runs on four-baggers in the victory. Kelly launched both of his homers in game one and finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Chaimowitz went 3-for-4 with a solo shot and Bellamy had two hits, including a homer.

After a scoreless first inning, senior Chris Symington opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the second inning. Chaimowitz doubled the Union lead in the third with a solo homer before Kelly delivered the big blast of the game, a three-run shot in the fourth that put Union up 5-0. Kelly and Bellamy both served up homers in the sixth inning, providing insurance runs that did not turn out to be needed.

While the bats were doing their work, junior James Salemme shut down the Vassar offense, limiting the Brewers to one hit while striking out nine in five innings of work to pick up the win. Sophomore Kevin Dewing closed out the game by allowing only one hit over his two frames, with the only blemish a two-out solo homer by Nick Greenhawt that broke up the shutout bid.

Game 2: Union 10, Vassar 5

The Union bats stayed hot in game two, scoring four times in the third and five times in the fifth to take control of the game early.

No Dutchman had more than one hit in the game, but Chaimowitz led the way with four RBIs and two runs scored and freshman Noah Schott also drove in a pair.

After two innings of scoreless ball, Union opened the scoring in grand fashion in the third, as Chaimowitz launched a grand slam over the left-center field wall to put Union up by four. After Vassar got one back in the top of the fourth, the Dutchmen responded with five in the bottom half, taking advantage of a wild pitch and an error before Schott delivered a two-run single.

Vassar chipped away with two runs in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and ninth, but the home team had built up an insurmountable edge. Union's final run of the game came in the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Sebastian Pike.

Junior Chris Murdock got the start for Union and went four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out eight. Freshman Kyle Patlove picked up the win by pitching one scoreless inning, as the bullpen limited Vassar to two runs over the final five frames.

Union will return to action next Sunday for a non-conference doubleheader at SUNY Oneonta starting at noon.
