The Youngstown State baseball team completed the three-game series sweep of Bellarmine with a 5-1 victory on Sunday at Knights Field.

The Penguins scored three runs in the top of the first inning before adding single runs in the third and fifth frames. The Knights plated one run in the eighth to produce the final margin. Youngstown State won its fourth straight game to improve to 29-21 overall this season while Bellarmine drops to 13-34.

YSU starter Jon Snyder put together another impressive pitching performance as he allowed only two singles and struck out five batters over five scoreless innings to earn his fifth victory of the season. The junior right-hander has now allowed just two earned runs over his last five starts. Over his last two outings, he has allowed only three hits and struck out 14 batters in 11 scoreless innings of work. Snyder, who did not allow a hit until fourth inning, retired the side in order in the second. He recorded a strikeout in three different frames, and he had multiple punch outs in two different innings.

Offensively, Jeff Wehler went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Turner Grau went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run while Dominick Bucko was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Phillip Glasser, Blaze Glenn, Nick Caruso and Dylan Swarmer also had hits for the Penguins.

The Penguins jumped ahead early with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Wehler hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Bucko. Grau then belted a two-out, two-run home run down the right field line to give YSU a 3-0 lead.

Youngstown State pushed its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third when Glasser hit a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bucko. The Penguins added another run in the top of the fifth to increase their advantage to 5-0. Caruso hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a balk, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lucas Nasonti and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wehler.

Bellarmine got on the board with one run on two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chris Gambert hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Brett Pfaadt delivered a two-out RBI single to right field that plated Gambert.

Chad Coles, who retired the side in order in the sixth, did not allow a hit over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Dalton Earich surrendered one run on three hits in one third of an inning while Nathan Ball retired the only batter he faced in the eighth. Joel Hake allowed one hit in one third of an inning, and Gary Clift Jr. allowed two hits while recording the final four outs to earn his eighth save of the season. Clift Jr.'s eight saves are the third most in a season in school history, and he is the first Penguin since 2007 to record at least eight saves in a season.

Bellarmine starter Reece Davis took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four over four innings of work. Shane Barringer was responsible for one run on one hit in one inning of relief while Devin Ecklar allowed two hits and fanned three batters over four scoreless innings.

Gambert went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored to pace the Knights offensively.

Youngstown State will return home to close out the regular season with a four-game Horizon League series against Milwaukee at Eastwood Field beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. Live audio will be available at YSNLive.com.
