Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon Heacock talks to members of the press during a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, in San Antonio. Iowa State takes on Washington State in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Friday.
We knew Matt Campbell’s staff members would be getting raises when the head coach’s latest contract extension was announced earlier this year and now we finally have all the details of those contract changes.
Defensive coordinator Jon Heacock and offensive coordinator Tom Manning will each make $925,000 for the 2021 season, and each has a chance to become the school’s first $1 million assistants if they remain on staff until July 1, 2023, according to a report from the Des Moines Register’s Randy Peterson on Monday.
The coordinators were each bumped up $115,000 from their base salaries of $810,000 during the 2020 season, which was one of the most successful in the program’s history, ending with the school’s first Big 12 title game berth and a Fiesta Bowl win over Oregon back in January.
Perhaps the most notable salary bump went to running game coordinator and wide receivers coach Nate Scheelhaase, one of the college coaching profession’s rising stars, who will make $500,000 during the 2021 season, up $185,000 from his base salary in 2020. This bump can be largely be attributed to Scheelhaase adding the duty of coaching running backs to his previous role as wide receivers coach. Still, his added responsibility and the financial commitment show Campbell’s belief in Scheelhaase’s potential as a coach.
Scheelhaase’s salary of $500,000 lines up with that of strength and conditioning coach Dave Andrews, who received a $30,000 raise from the $470,000 he was paid during his first season with the program in 2020.
Linebackers coach Tyson Veidt and quarterbacks coach Joel Gordon will be the next highest-paid staff members at $400,000. The architect of Iowa State’s resurgence along the defensive front, Eli Rasheed, will be paid $390,000.
Cornerbacks coach Matt Caponi will receive a $355,000 base salary in 2021 while offensive line coach Jeff Meyers is paid $325,000. First year safeties coach, and former Cyclone safety, Deon Broomfield will be paid $315,000 this season while the other first-year coach, Taylor Mouser, will be paid $180,000 to lead the tight end room.
All 10 members of the on-field staff, plus Andrews, are signed through the 2022 or 2023 seasons.
Campbell’s extension announced in February, which is slated to keep him in Ames through the 2028 season, awarded him a $200,000 raise to $4 million for the 2021 season.
