Orono, Maine -- Anna Schumann of the women's track & field team and Cam Spicer of the men's ice hockey program were announced as nominees for the 2020-21 America East Man and Woman of the Year awards, as announced by the conference on June 10.
Schumann, who holds the third best triple jump mark in University of Maine history, graduated in May of 2021 with a double major in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology and a minor in Microbiology. Schumann, who achieved a 3.99 GPA during her college career, was the female recipient of the 2021 M' Club Dean Smith award, presented annually to the top male and female student-athletes at the University of Maine. Schumann has also dedicated her time to many volunteer roles including assisting with officiating back in her home country of Germany for the German Athletics Association, coaching middle and high school clinics in Maine, officiating and organizing track and field meets throughout the local community, and assisting with the 2019 Maine Day Meal Pack-Out event.
Spicer, named the 2021 Outstanding Graduating Student in the Maine Business School, has spent four seasons as a defenseman for the Maine Men's Ice hockey team. An Eagle Scout and Presidential Scholar honoree, Spicer graduated in May of 2021 with a double major in Financial Economics and Finance and Honors. Over his four years, Spicer has accumulated a 3.99 GPA. Spicer has also committed significant time with volunteer service hours dedicated to coaching youth hockey clinics for local children in the Bangor/Orono community, and spending time on campus at the Newman Center to go along with 200-300 hours each summer dedicated to Hockey Ministries International. He is also part of the cabinet for UMaine's American Sign Language club and dedicated many hours as a tutor.
The award recognizes the conference's senior male and female student-athlete who has best distinguished himself and herself throughout their collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership.
To be nominated, student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2021 spring season or received their undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2021 term and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.500 (4.000 scale). Institutions are permitted to submit up to two nominees for each award if at least one is an international or ethnic minority student-athlete.
The nominees will be narrowed down to three finalists per gender, who will be announced on Wednesday, June 16. The 2020-21 America East Man and Woman of the Year will be unveiled on Tuesday, June 22.
America East began honoring a Woman of the Year in 2006 and introduced the Man of the Year award in 2015.
