Game Recap: Football | | Dominique Del Prete, Assistant Athletic Communications Director
Senior Donovan Pacatte put together another solid outing in the victory, with a career-high 20 completions made on a day that saw him go 20-for-29 with 251 yards and a touchdown. Fellow senior Andre Ross Jr. recorded his 39th career touchdown and Ike Irabor scored his ninth of the season to move into second place in career rushing touchdowns. Junior Michael Fiore found the endzone for his seventh touchdown of the season while first-year Nicholas Dunneman registered a career-high 119 receiving yards on 10 catches. As a whole, the Union offense recorded 393 yards of total offense and were a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Dutchmen held Rochester to only 192 total yards of offense including only 89 passing yards. Senior Jack Flanagan had another big day with 1.5 sacks for a total loss of 13 yards and five total tackles while classmate Spencer Goldstien led the way with eight tackles. Junior Miguel Rodriguez chipped in seven stops including a sack for a loss of four yards and fellow junior Jaden Duncan also added a sack for a nine-yard loss.
Junior Andrew Lau connected on both field goal attempts, a 28-yard kick in the first and a 35-yard field goal in the second. He also went a perfect 3-for-3 in PATs.
After a pair of scoreless drives to start the game, it was Union who found the scoreboard first in the opening frame. Union made it deep into the red zone before a penalty pushed the Dutchmen back to the 14-yard line. Irabor made an 11-yard rush to bring up 4th and 11, but Union opted to go for the field goal to take a 3-0 lead. On the first snap of the ensuing drive, sophomore Azarai Lewis picked off Ryan Rose to give Union the ball back. Pacatte connected with Dunneman on a 23-yard throw to get deep into Rochester territory. Lau was called upon again and was successful with a 35-yard field goal to give Union a 6-0 lead.
Union scored their first touchdown of the game a few drives later. Irabor made a 13-yard run to get Rochester's 36-yard line and on the next play, Pacatte found Ross Jr. in the endzone with a 36-yard pass. The Yellowjackets missed a 36-yard field goal, and Union took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Yellowjackets found their way onto the scoresheet on the opening drive of the third quarter, snapping a streak of nine straight quarters that Union did not allow a touchdown. After converting on a key fourth down, Rose connected with Trey Johnson again for a 25-yard touchdown. After a misplayed punt gave Rochester excellent field position, the Union defense made a statement late in the third quarter by putting pressure on Rose, culminating in a sack by Flanagan on fourth down to turn the ball over. Eight straight rushes by Fiore later put Union up 20-7 early in the fourth quarter.
The Dutchmen capped off the scoring later in the final frame. Junior Avery Turton caught a 21-yard reception to get to the Rochester 16-yard line, and Irabor made two carries to put the game out of reach, breaking a tie with Chris Coney '11 with his 46th career rushing touchdown.
Union travels to Geneva, N.Y. next Saturday for a Liberty League matchup with Hobart. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium.
