BILLINGS, Mont. – A stretch of back-to-back conference road series awaits the Western Oregon University baseball team starting this week when they travel to face Montana State Billings in a four-game set opening on Friday with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. The teams will then play another doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. Both starts times are Pacific.
The teams opened the GNAC part of the schedule back on Mar. 4-5 in Monmouth with the Wolves taking three of four. WOU outscored MSUB 22-11, taking the first doubleheader by a commanding 18-3 tally.
WOU enters the weekend 19-12 overall and 10-6 in GNAC play, going 7-8 on the road this year. Derek Maiben and Jacob Maiben continued to lead the offense with Derek hitting .339, coming away with 37 hits, 28 runs, three doubles, a triple, a home run, 21 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Jacob is hitting .333, coming away with 34 hits, 21 runs, three doubles, a triple, nine RBI and 10 stolen bases. He also has 16 walks on the season. Jackson Holstad is hitting .277 with 28 hits, five doubles, a triple, 17 RBI and eight stolen bases. Anthony Zellner holds a .262 average with 22 hits, six doubles, a home run and 13 RBI. Spencer Weston has 17 RBI, John Stark leads the team with three home runs, Logan Ho is off to a strong start hitting .444 in his first three games, driving in five, Sebastian Morales is hitting .313 with 10 hits and Levi Cummings has 13 hits, 13 runs and eight RBI. Justyn Herzog has a hit in six of his last seven games and has 13 on the year.
The pitching staff has been strong all season with six pitchers holding below a 3.00 ERA. Arturo Alvarez has a 1.86 ERA in 38.2 innings, going 4-0 with 22 strikeouts. Sebasten Boivin has a 2.08 ERA in 26 innings, going 2-1 with a save and 20 strikeouts. Matthew Dunaway returned to the lineup this past weekend earning his first save of the year. He holds a 2.33 ERA in 19.1 innings, along with a team-high 33 strikeouts. Parker Johnson earned his team-best fifth victory this past weekend, to go along with a 2.45 ERA in 29.1 innings and has 27 strikeouts. Mike Peterson has a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings, going 1-0 with 28 strikeouts to just three walks. Dominic Miller had another strong outing against George Fox and has a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings, posting 14 strikeouts. Bryce Bond struck out the side against the Bruins and has 29 strikeouts on the year in 22.2 innings, going 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA. Seth Kuykendall, Chris Hardin and Michael Moore are all tied for the team lead in saves with two. Curran Mitzel has the lowest ERA on the team having yet to allow a run in 3.1 innings and two appearances.
Alvarez ranks high in multiple categories both nationally and in the GNAC including leading the GNAC and 29th nationally in ERA, leading the GNAC and 87th nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.98), leading the GNAC and 46th nationally in WHIP (1.01) and second in the GNAC and 108th nationally in walked allowed per nine innings (2.09). Derek Maiben leads the GNAC and is 12th nationally in sacrifice flies (5), leading the GNAC and 38th nationally in stolen bases, leading the GNAC and 55th nationally in stolen bases per game (0.53), and leading the GNAC and 16th nationally in toughest to strikeout (18.2). Jacob Maiben is second in the GNAC and 152nd nationally in stolen bases and second in the GNAC in stolen bases per game (0.33). Johnson is tied for first in the GNAC and 48th nationally in victories.
WOU leads the GNAC in ERA (3.73), which ranks 17th nationally, fielding percentage (97.2), which ranks 17th nationally, hits allowed per nine innings (8.33), which ranks 23rd nationally, sacrifice bunts (20), which ranks 21st nationally, stolen bases (47), which ranks 64th nationally, stolen bases per game (1.52), which ranks 78th nationally, WHIP (1.34), which ranks 20th nationally and in win-loss percentage (.613), which ranks 76th nationally.
Montana State Billings is 18-16 overall and 9-7 in GNAC play, going 3-3 at home. This past week, the 'Jackets came back from a 28-3 loss in the first game against Central Washington to win the final three games of the series. During their last home series, MSUB split a four-game series with Northwest Nazarene. Outside of that home set with the Nighthawks, the 'Jackets only other home games were a doubleheader against Mary.
Cooper Dulich leads the offense hitting .375 with 39 hits, 20 runs, nine doubles, a home run and 23 RBI. Hayden Foltz is hitting .330 with 35 hits, 20 runs, 11 doubles, two triples, a home run and 30 RBI. Carson Green is hitting .317 with 38 hits, 30 runs, seven doubles, three triples, three home runs and 24 RBI. Dominick Buso is also hitting over .300 at .315 with 28 hits, 30 runs, eight doubles, a triple, a home run and 16 RBI.
On the mound, Tyler Elliott has the lowest ERA at 4.05 in 26.2 innings, going 3-0 on the season with 35 strikeouts. Dylan Barkley and Matthew Houlihan are both 4-3 on the season having thrown over 40 innings on the year. Connor Redmond adds three wins in 33.2 innings.
In the earlier meetings, WOU took the first game 10-2 with Alvarez getting the win against Barkley. The Wolves had 13 hits and took advantage of five MSUB errors. Holstad drove in three runs and Jacob Maiben added a pair of RBI. The Wolves completed the Saturday sweep taking game two by a score of 8-1. Bond got the win over Houlihan. Weston had three hits and Zellner added two. WOU posted eight hits and again took advantage of five MSUB errors. Game three of the series was the closest with WOU taking the 2-1 victory with Johnson getting the win over Jackson Betancourt and Kuykendall claiming the save. Jacob Maiben had two hits in the win. Johnson went 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the win before Kuykendall closed it out with a pair of strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings. In the series finale, Redmond got the win against Moore as the game was scoreless into the sixth when both teams scored. The 'Jackets then exploded for six runs in the seventh to take the 7-2 victory. Stark and Weston drove in runs for the Wolves. Peterson started and tossed six innings allowing just one run.
WOU is 87-35 against MSUB since 2008 and have gone 37-16 in Billings. During the last meeting in Billings last year, the Wolves swept the four-game set scoring 75 runs as WOU scored at least 10 runs in all four games.
