TURLOCK, Calif. – Backed by a pair of solid starts from Chelsea Smith and Maddie Mayer, the Western Oregon University softball team played two close games to open the Tournament of Champions on Friday. Smith took a one-hitter deep into game one before the Wolves defeated Dominican (CA), 4-2. In the second game, Mayer limited Cal State Monterey Bay to just two runs, but that was enough for the Otters to take the 2-0 win.
In the tournament opener, Smith carried a one-hit shutout through five innings. It was needed with Dominican (CA) (12-24) starter Shelby Keltner matching Smith for most of the game.
WOU (18-17) broke through first with a run in the opening inning. Logan Carlos walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Zoie Recolan delivered a single up the middle to bring in Carlos for the 1-0 lead.
Both pitchers then kept the score 1-0 all the way into the sixth. The Wolves tallied three runs in the inning and those extra insurance runs proved vital. Natalie Willoughby singled with one out in the sixth and quickly moved to third when Kirah McGlothan hit the first pitch for a double to left-center. Sophie Franklin drove in both runs with a solid single up the middle for the 3-0 lead. She also moved to second on the play and then came home on a single to first by Maddie Brandner for the 4-0 lead.
The Penguins got right back into the game in the home half. With the first four batters reaching, Dominican (CA) had a run in. Smith then locked down getting a sacrifice fly out, before another fly out and strikeout ended the inning with WOU ahead at 4-2.
Smith closed the game strong in the seventh getting a 1-2-3 inning. WOU held the 9-4 edge in hits and committed the only two errors. Franklin went 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Recolan added two hits and an RBI. Smith tallied the win in the circle (9-3) allowing just the two earned runs in the complete game victory, adding six strikeouts and just one walk.
Four players had a hit for the Penguins. In the circle, Keltner started and ended up with the loss (7-14) allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Rosa Leguria tossed 1.2 shutout innings to finish the game.
In game two, Mayer and Jensen Main from Cal State Monterey Bay went toe-to-toe with just eight total hits allowed, four by each team.
Neither team was able to score over the first four innings and both pitchers worked around minimal traffic over the course of those innings.
In the fifth, Cal State Monterey Bay (23-10) plated the first run getting a couple of hits for the 1-0 lead.
The Wolves tried to get the offense going in the sixth when Carlos opened the frame with a single, but was cut down trying to steal second. Kate Ronning later walked, but was erased on a double play.
After the Otters used two more hits to get a run home in the seventh, WOU picked up a single from McGlothan in the home half, but weren't able to mount a rally.
In addition to each team coming away with four hits, both teams had an error in the contest. Carlos went 2-3 to lead the offense, with Willoughby and McGlothan adding hits. Mayer took the hard-luck loss (5-7) in the circle allowing the two earned runs, along with four strikeouts to just one walk.
Abby Alcayaga had two hits and both runs batted in to lead Cal State Monterey Bay. Main went all seven innings in the circle to get the complete game shutout victory (14-5) adding four strikeouts.
WOU continues the Tournament of Champions tomorrow (Saturday) playing two more games. The Wolves open the day against #1 Concordia-Irvine at 9 a.m. and then finish the day with Academy of Art of 4:30 p.m.
