Swarthmore, PA – The Washington College softball team split a doubleheader with the Swarthmore Garnet, in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Freshman shortstop Chloe Trefz ripped a two-run double to give the Maroon and White a, 2-1, game one victory behind the pitching of ace Lexi Barnhart. The hosts came back to take the nightcap by a score of 6-1. The Shorewomen now stand at 9-10 (3-1) while the Garnet are 16-3 (5-1).
Game 1, Washington College 2, Swarthmore 1
How It Happened
-The game remained scoreless until the Shorewomen pushed across two runs on a hit and two costly errors in the top of the fourth. Junior catcher Lexie Witmer reached on an error by third baseman Maya Estrera to lead-off the frame. Freshman first baseman Maddy Kendall then put down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error by second baseman Laura Hirai. The Garnet retired the next batter, however, Trefz came up big with a two-run double to left field to plate the only two runs the visitors would need.
- Barnhart was one out away from a shutout but shortstop Alexandra Simon ruined the bid with a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh. Following a walk, Barnhart got first baseman Emily Bertrand to line out to senior center fielder Alyssa Vieira to finish the game.
For the Shorewomen
Hitting
-Sophomore third baseman Hannah Solge went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt.
-Trefz was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Pitching
- Barnhart (4-6) scattered seven hits, walked two and fanned a pair.
For the Garnet
Hitting
-Simon went 2-for-4 (HR) with a stolen base.
Pitching
-Gwen Glatz (4-2) was the hard-luck loser as she allowed just five hits and no earned runs in 7.0 innings. She struck out three Shorewomen and did not allow a walk.
Game 2, Swarthmore 6, Washington College 1
-The Shorewomen scored their lone run in the top of the first inning. Barnhart singled down the right field line and scored on Kendall's two-out double to right field.
- The hosts exploded for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to take control of the contest. Simon tied the game with a single up the middle, right fielder Katie Hart drove in a run with an RBI double, and designated player Brooke Coneeny added a two-run single up the middle.
- Haverford added two runs in the bottom off the sixth on an RBI single through the right side by Simon and an RBI single by third baseman Gwen Gladz.
For the Shorewomen
Hitting
-Solge, Vieira, Barnhart and Kendall all had one hit apiece.
Pitching
- Freshman Gen Kozub (5-4) allowed four earned runs on six hits over 3.0 innings.
For the Garnet
Hitting
-Third baseman Glatz went 4-for-4 (2B, RBI).
- Simon was 2-for-3 (walk) with 2 RBI.
- Coneeny drove in two runs.
Pitching
-Meg Ozawa (9-1) went the distance for the win in the circle. She allowed just four hits, walked two, and fanned four batters.
