SEATTLE, Wash. – Michigan State gymnastics posted its highest all-time team score on Saturday night at the NCAA Regional Finals, the third time this season alone that the record has been broken. Capping off a spectacular season, the Spartans fought down to the wire with top-ranked Alabama and Utah, finishing in third overall with a score of 197.625.
Utah won the Regional Final with a score of 198.200, with Alabama close behind having scored a 197.175. The Spartans landed in third after holding strong at second place until Utah hit back-to-back 10.0s on beam to close out the final rotation. Stanford rounded out the team scores with a 197.250.
The Spartans closed out a remarkable season by topping their previous all-time high team score of 197.575, set on March 5 against Western Michigan. MSU had a record-busting season, first setting the new program-high on Feb. 13 against Illinois and re-breaking the record against the Broncos. In addition, the Green & White also posted their all-time best score on vault, a 49.400, to best the previous high of 49.375 set in 1996.
Schulte was the all-around winner in Saturday night's Finals, posting a final score of 39.600 over four events. She tied her career-best on floor with a 9.950 and added to her high-scoring night with a 9.925 on beam, 9.900 on vault and 9.825 on bars. The first-year Spartan tied for the floor title with Kyla Bryant of Stanford, Sydney Soloski and Grace McCallum of Utah, and Lexi Graber and Emily Gaskins of Alabama.
Sophomore Baleigh Garcia tied for fourth overall on beam with a career-best 9.950. The All-B1G gymnast previously held a career-high of 9.925 on the apparatus. Schulte and fellow freshman Gabrielle Stephen both tied for fifth on vault with identical scores of 9.900. Sophomore Delanie Harkness and junior Tori Loomis tied for sixth on vault with scores of 9.850.
MSU began the meet on bars, moving then to beam and floor and ending on vault. Their highest event score of the night was a 49.550 on floor, tying Thursday night's score. They posted a 49.425 on beam, 49.400 on vault and 49.275 on bars.
The Spartans ended the first rotation tied with Stanford for third place as both teams totaled a 49.275 on their events. MSU improved upon last night's bars score of 49.225, putting up four scores of 9.850 or better. Harkness and Loomis led with a 9.875 each, Loomis setting a new career high after scoring a 9.850 in three straight meets.
Utah stood in first with a 49.600 while Alabama scored 49.500.
Michigan State gained more confidence heading into beam, scoring a 49.425. Garcia led the way for the Spartans with a huge 9.950, setting a new career-high. Close behind was Schulte with a 9.925, just shy of her all-time best. The squad's final score of 49.425 was also an improvement on Thursday's event score and was the fourth-highest beam score in program history. After two rotations, Stanford held a narrow lead over the Spartans, 98.725-98.700, while Alabama held a 98.900 and Utah led the way with a 99.000.
The Spartans took to their best event, floor, in the third rotation. In the leadoff spot, senior Sydney Ewing scored a 9.875, followed by a 9.900 from junior Nyah Smith. Ewing was just .025 away from tying her career-best. Fellow senior Lea Mitchell tied her season-best with a 9.900 on her floor routine. With 9.900s from senior Ashley Hofelich and Harkness, capped off by a stellar 9.950 routine from Schulte, the Spartans tied their floor score from Thursday with a 39.550.
MSU moved into third after the rotation, totaling 148.250. Alabama stole the lead with a 148.525, while Utah fell to second with a 148.475. Stanford stood in fourth with a score of 148.025.
The Spartans battled their hearts out in the final rotation, taking to the vault. After a leadoff career-high 9.850 from Wiedeman, three Spartans scored a 9.900 with Garcia, Schulte and Stephen all sticking their landings. Hofelich scored a 9.850, before Stephen anchored the lineup with a 9.900 to add to the team's highest vault score in team history.
The scoreboard showed MSU on top after vault at the time, but Alabama and Utah overtook the top two spots shortly after. Alabama went up after their floor routine, but Utah's two 10.0s on beam closed out their rotation sealed the win for the Utes.
Michigan State's monumental 2022 season comes to a close after historic moments throughout the year. It was the team's first appearance in the postseason since 2016 and their best finish since 1998.
