KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan softball returns to conference play this weekend, traveling to the Empire State for a series with the Buffalo Bulls at Kenmore East High School. The series was originally scheduled for a Friday/Saturday split, but has since been shifted for a Saturday doubleheader, with the weekend finale to take place on Sunday. Game one on Saturday, April 2 begins at 3 p.m. with game two to follow, while Sunday's matchup is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
BREAKING DOWN THE BULLS (11-9, 3-1 MAC)
Buffalo hosts Western Michigan following a 13-3 victory over the Toledo Rockets in UT territory. A trio of Bulls launched home runs in the five-inning route, and the team tallied a total of 11 hits collectively in the contest. Junior pitcher Alexis Lucyshyn picked up the win in the circle for UB as well.
Lucyshyn has also been a key piece of the Buffalo efforts at the plate, posting a .345 batting average in addition to 20 hits, three home runs, 17 runs batted in, and nine runs scored. Junior infielder Brianna Castro is another catalyst for the Bulls, batting .340 with 18 hits, one home run, nine RBI's, and eight runs scored. Lucyshyn and Castro also post slugging averages of .552 and .528, respectively.
In the circle, Lucyshyn posts a 6-4 record with an ERA of 3.71 in 10 starts on the year as well as eight complete games. In 60.1 innings pitched, she has fanned a total of 39 batters while holding the opposition to an average of .276 when she gets the nod. Sophomore pitcher Julia Tarantino has logged 63.1 innings herself this season, going the distance seven times in addition to posting a 3.76 ERA with 36 K's in 10 starts.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WESTERN MICHIGAN (12-16, 2-1 MAC)
The Broncos venture to Buffalo on a bit of a hot streak, having won four of their last five games, most recently a 2-1 win on the road at Detroit Mercy. WMU struck for a pair of runs in the top half of inning number seven to squeak out the win behind enemy lines. Sophomore pitcher Rissa Bajusz picked up her fifth win of the season, giving up just three hits and going the distance for the seventh time this year.
Driving the Bronco bats has been senior pitcher Reily Galloway, who enters the weekend series with an average of .342 and slugging percentage of .544 in addition to 27 hits, four bombs, 15 RBI's, and nine runs scored. Sophomore infielder Cassidy Brendtke has been crucial for WMU at the plate as well, batting .293 with 24 hits, eight doubles, 10 RBI's, and 10 runs scored.
Galloway has also been key in the circle for head coach Kathy Leitke, posting a 7-7 record with an earned run average of just 1.54 on the year, which leads the Mid-American Conference. She has also registered a whopping 90.2 innings pitched thus far, recording 132 strikeouts, which is good for second conference-wide. Galloway also leads the MAC and ranks 29th in the nation in hits allowed per seven innings (4.25), and holds opposing hitters to an average of .170 when dealing.
ON THE HORIZON
Following this weekend's showdown with Buffalo, WMU returns home to Kalamazoo where they host the Bowling Green Falcons for some mid-week MACtion. The two teams square off on Wednesday, April 5 for a 3 p.m. first pitch, and play two the following day on Thursday, April 6, with game one scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Admission to all Western Michigan home softball games is free to spectators, and live scoring will be available for each of the three contests.
