BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team hit the halfway point of Patriot League play with an 8-1 record and the Mountain Hawks will kick off the second half of league play with a visit to Bucknell this weekend. The Mountain Hawks and Bison will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon from Becker Field in Lewisburg, Pa., and will close out their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
Lehigh enters the weekend series at 19-14-1 overall. On Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks traveled to Army West Point and won 6-4 in the resumption of a suspended game from March 26 before suffering their first league loss in the series finale. The Mountain Hawks own series sweeps over Lafayette and Holy Cross and won two out of three games against Army to claim that season series.
Junior Emily Cimino is riding a hot streak at the plate to take the team lead with a .425 batting average. Cimino leads Lehigh with 45 hits 10 doubles and four triples; and ranks second with four home runs and 24 RBIs. She is riding an 11-for-19 stretch over her last six games with six runs scored and three RBIs. Cimino is batting .500 (16-for-32) with eight runs scored, six extra base hits and 10 RBIs in nine Patriot League games.
Senior Jaelynn Chesson remains the top run producer with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs to go along with a .375 average. Senior Carley Barjaktarovich and sophomore Brooke Cannon are also over .300 overall on the season.
In the pitcher's circle, senior Gabriella Nori and sophomore Katelyn Young have seen the lion's share of the work. Nori is 8-8 with a 3.01 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 83.2 innings, while Young is 10-5 overall and 5-0 in Patriot League decisions.
At 8-1, Lehigh sits in second place in the Patriot League standings. The Mountain Hawks are a game behind first place Boston University and a game ahead of Army and Colgate, who are tied for third.
Bucknell comes into the weekend series at 5-34 overall and 1-11 in the league. The Bison have dropped their last eight games, including Patriot League series sweeps at the hands of Army and Colgate. In league play, Bucknell has also lost two out of three games against Holy Cross and was swept by Boston University.
Sarah Caffrey is in her second season as Bucknell's head coach.
Bucknell is hitting just .211 as a team. Nicole Rivait leads the offense with a .322 average, 38 hits, two home runs and 10 RBIs, while Chase Knapp has two homers, 12 runs scored and nine driven in.
Five Bison have thrown at least 21 innings in the circle this season, led by Kelly Toomey, who is 4-13 with a 4.08 ERA in 92.2 innings of work.
Lehigh leads the all-time series versus Bucknell 98-48. The Mountain Hawks won three out of four meetings last season. The teams split a doubleheader at Leadership Park last April 24 before Lehigh swept a twin bill the following day at Becker Field.
Following the Bucknell series, Lehigh will return to Leadership Park for its final five home games. The Mountain Hawks will host Saint Joseph's in a non-league doubleheader April 27 at 3 p.m. and will then host Colgate for three games April 30-May 1.
