WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Emily Dawson continued her hot start to the season with two more goals and an assist as the Union College field hockey team ran its season-opening winning streak to three games with a 3-1 win over William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon at Wightman Stadium.
After scoring three goals in the first two games of the year, Dawson added two more goals and five points to her ledger on Saturday. The senior scored the first two goals of the game for Union (3-0) and also added an assist on first-year Alyssa Pavano's tally.
In earning only its second victory over the Pioneers, Union completely dominated the home team in the win, posting a 21-5 edge in shots and forcing WPU keeper Kourtney Hartzel to make 16 saves to keep her team in the game.
Union once again got off to a good start in today's game, with Dawson receiving a long pass from classmate Jill Bove and beating Hartzel one-on-one at the 5:08 mark. The visitors posted a 6-0 edge in shots in the opening frame.
Dawson doubled the Union lead 11:50 into the second stanza, cleaning up a rebound in front for her fifth goal of the season as the team took an 11-1 shot edge into halftime.
Pavano got on the scoreboard 5:21 into the third quarter with her second goal of the season, taking a pass from Dawson off the post and finishing from close range.
William Paterson got one goal back soon after, but the Union defense made the lead stand up. First-year Sophie Brady made three saves to earn her third victory of the season.
Union will return home on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. matchup against SUNY Oneonta at Frank Bailey Field.
