Women's rugby began the 2022-23 season with an exhibition 43-0 shutout victory over the Kansas City Jazz Saturday afternoon at Hodge Park in Kansas City, Missouri.
With the match being the first game action of the year for both teams, the Lions used it as a chance to see some new and returning veterans mixed together in a game setting.
Freshman Lily Robinson put the first points on the board with a 40-meter run and Jackie Garro added the extra two points for a 7-0 lead. The Jazz prevented any further scoring in the first half as Lindenwood struggled to find continuity in the attack.
That changed early in the second half with a quick score by transfer Abby Kinnard to build the Lions advantage to 12-0. Lindenwood continued to find its flow in the attack and added several more tries in the remainder of the match. Freshman Tanaka Elister, Kinnard, and freshman Jayleen Rivera all scored once with senior Sydney Julich scoring twice. Ava Denner and Robinson added the conversions.
In the annual match that tests both sides for the new season, Julich was named Lions MVP of the match and freshman Angelrose Nacilla earned the Hit Stick award.
Women's rugby will continue to prep for the new season with two Black & Gold matches the next two weekends before heading on the road to face the Colorado Wolves September 24 at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado.
