AMHERST, Mass. – It was a hard-fought battle as the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (2-3-1, 0-0-0 AE) and the Massachusetts Minutewomen (1-2-3, 0-0-0 A10) played to an exciting 2-2 draw at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon.

"We came out with a plan, and I thought we executed pretty well," said head coach Mira Novak. "Really happy with the team's effort today and to score twice to go into the half with the lead. I was happy with everyone's hunger and worth ethic. I couldn't ask for more in terms of willingness and desire to win from our team."

Junior Calliste Brookshire (Kingston, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season while fellow junior Chloe Layne (Wrentham, Mass.) netted her second of the year for the River Hawks. Graduate student Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) tallied an assist and redshirt junior Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) made four saves on the afternoon.

"Some good performances from our back line and midfielders. Our forwards too, didn't get too many chances but capitalized on the chances they did get," added Novak. "I thought Lily [Fabian] was a standout performer today and dealt with the problems they caused. Great performance from her and Dunja [Mostarac], as usual."

Massachusetts started the game with plenty of possession in the opening 15 minutes but had no shots on goal to show for it. The hosts utilized the space on the wings and sent a few dangerous crosses into the box, but the River Hawk defense repelled the attack. The Minutewomen took the lead in the 18th minute after Lauren Bonavita's outside the box strike found the back of the net.

While the hosts kept most of the possession following the goal, UMass Lowell's defense did not budge. In the 22nd minute, the River Hawks found an equalizer through Brookshire. The junior collected the ball in the midfield and drove at the Massachusetts defense. She cut onto her left foot and drilled a shot into the corner to tie the game.

Neither side had any real threats on goal following the tying goal and the Minutewomen continued to control the pace of play. The hosts did get a chance with 12 minutes remaining in the half as they were awarded a free kick just outside the box on the right side of the field, but the ensuing set piece went wide. The River Hawks took the lead in the 37th minute as Lily Fabian's quick free kick found Chloe Layne just inside the box. Layne's great first touch allowed her to rifle a left-footed shot into the top corner to give UMass Lowell the 2-1 edge. The River Hawks took the lead into the halftime break.

The Minutewomen made a change in goal to start the second half as Bella Mendoza took over for Megan Olszewski. Massachusetts tied the game in the 53rd minute as Bonavita tucked away a third-chance opportunity for her second goal of the game. Graduate student Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) had a good chance in the 58th minute to put the visitors back in front, but her header bounced wide of the post.

UMass Lowell held off several chances in the defensive end and tried to catch the Minutewomen on the break going the other way, but the visitors could not capitalize on the opportunities. Massachusetts' offensive pressure grew but the River Hawk defense was equal to the task as the game hit 20 minutes to play.

Chloe Layne had a great opportunity to give the River Hawks the lead again, but her point-blank header in the 73rd minute was saved by Mendoza. The pace of play in the final 20 minutes slowed with both teams cautiously defending. Sophomore Ioanna Papatheodorou (Nea Erithraia, Greece) got in behind the defense in the 85th minute with another good chance on goal, but the shot went wide of the net. Lily Fabian came up with another big play as the graduate student made a nice tackle to stop a late Massachusetts attack. The teams battled and ultimately shared the points in a 2-2 draw.

The River Hawks will return to Lowell for a few days before traveling to Alabama to take on Auburn on Thursday, September 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
