WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The UMass Lowell River Hawks (2-4-2, 0-0-0 AE) and Hartford Hawks (5-1-1, 0-0-0 CC) played to a 1-1 draw at Al-Marzook Field in West Hartford on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate student Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia) scored the lone goal for the River Hawks, her first goal of the season. Fellow graduate student Chaima Khammar (Cologne, Germany) tallied the assist on the late equalizer. Sophomore Ioanna Papatheodorou (Nea Erithraia, Greece) led the team with five shots on the afternoon while Mostarac and junior Marissa Saucedo (Ventura, Calif.) each added two shots. Freshman Bára Beránková (Hradec Králové, Czech Republic) made her second straight start in goal for the River Hawks. The rookie made four saves and allowed one goal.

"I think in the first half we didn't really execute and were sluggish," said head coach Mira Novak. "We allowed the top scorer in the country to beat us in transition and we have to be better than that. I thought the second half was better, but still not a good enough performance. I'm glad we found a goal on set piece, but todays result is not the standard they've set for themselves."

The River Hawks started the game well, controlling the pace of play with plenty of possession. Hartford's back line as put under pressure early on, but UMass Lowell could not create a real dangerous threat on net. Junior Chloe Layne (Wrentham, Mass.), graduate student Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) and Ioanna Papatheodorou connected in a lovely buildup play, but again could not find the back of the net. Nelson's shot from outside the box in the 15th minute was the best chance the River Hawks created in the opening 20 minutes.

Hartford broke the deadlock in the 29th minute after Imani Jenkins drove down the left wing before cutting inside onto her right foot and drilling a shot into the corner to goal, giving the hosts the lead. Following the goal, the Hawks found a rhythm with Jenkins creating another great chance that went over the bar. In the 31st minute, Kirti Craig had the best chance of the half as a cross found the freshman inside the box. Craig's shot was destined for the top corner, but Hartford's GK palmed the effort over the crossbar. The Hawks led 1-0 at the break.

The second half began much like the first with the River Hawks controlling the ball. Papatheodorou had a chance in the 55th minute but saw her close-range header saved. That would be the best chance for UMass Lowell until the 70th minute when a spell of possession moved the visitors into the attacking third. Marissa Saucedo found space at the penalty marker in the 72nd minute, but a diving Hartford defender blocked the shot out for a corner.

Parity finally came for the River Hawks in the 84th minute after Dunja Mostarac tucked away a free kick from Chaima Khammar for her first of the season. UMass Lowell's goal sparked life and the visitors pressed the Hartford back line once again. The River Hawks had another chance late, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

"We have a full week to rest before Dartmouth and then we have a few days before conference play," added Novak. "We'll look to fix some things, try to get off to a better start and finish our chances."

UMass Lowell will have a week off before taking on Dartmouth om Sunday, September 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Cushing Field.
